I have the exact same issue. I cannot log out or shutdown my system by either
using GUI log out or through the terminal using "gnome-session-quit" (for log
out)

I have experienced this since a few days as well. For me, this also
seems to cause not being able to logout or switch users. I hope a fix
will be found soon.
