Hi Satya,
tpconfig does detect my touchpad, but all the kernel detects is a PS/2
Generic Mouse. I've seen many bugs related to this one but still no fix.
The funny thing, is that this same laptop worked with whatever kernel
release i was using 4 years ago.

Can you please check if tpconfig detects your touchpad?
sudo apt-get install tpconfig
sudo tpconfig
It should print something like "found synaptics/Alps touchpad".
check if your kernel detects your touchpad
dmesg |grep input - lists all input devices detected , see if there is
some
same problem on a Toshiba Satellite Pro M10. i8042.nomux and i8042.reset
dont fix the issue for me

Hi Teej,
I face this issue even in intrepid, but those additional flags solve the
problem. I have got new DELL laptop and I will not be using the old
connoi laptop anymore.

I have tried with 8.04 Hardy Heron and the issue still remains the
same...
I am able to get it work with the following options to the kernel
"i8042.reset i8042.nomux"
IF you need any other information do let me know.

Feisty is not supported anymore. Could you try Hardy or Intrepid Live CD
to see if your touchpad works with them?

Finally My problem was fixed.. I read the following in ubuntu forums.
But I want the ubuntu team to fix it and patch it if possible else
