I've tested the suggested current image (xenial-desktop-amd64.iso
08-Feb-2016 08:09 1.4G) and it works!
As a sidenote, in Ubuntu 15.10 the kernel (4.2.0-27-generic) still doesn't work.

Hello,
Sorry for the late response. I've finally been able to try out the
latest kernel from the link you mentioned - 4.4.0-040400rc4-generic
#201512061930. And it works great! The miniDisplay VGA adapter works
again, the iphone5 tethering works again, everything's looking good!

I was having a problem rather similar to this (although on different
hardware). I found that installing a 4.3.xx version kernel from the
mainline builds described above fixed the problem.
(Miraculously, I don't think it broke anything else either!)
