I confirm the same situation in Hardy with a Dell Latitude D810. I was
successful at using the irda-utils in Gutsy, but had this result when I
did a fresh install of Hardy. When I install it irda-utils through
command line, I receive the message below:

I have customized the current kernel to my needs plus some options, needed to
build the ubuntu-modules package, and the problem went away! Unfortunately I
can't determine which parameter(s) caused this problem. Reinstalling the
original package (original config) causes the problem to come back.
