Since having reported the bug, I have started tracking the packages in
the hardy repository, and now I am unable to replicate this bug any
longer. Though I can't say what the problem was earlier, it seems to
have gone now.

Hi.
I've heard that sometimes the processor governor may be the culprit :
while on battery, switch to the "performance" governor and try to
suspend. Hope it helps.
