X is most likely crashing, and X crashes are always driver/xserver issues, even
if "normal" apps do trigger them.
If this is still an issue in a supported version of Ubuntu (9.04 would be
best), please reopen this bug and provide:
-The output of the command lspci -vvnn
-A copy of the /var/log/Xor

The right source package is mplayer, not gnome-mplayer.
About the deactivation of Compiz causing window's frame to disappear, thats
another bug I'm afraid.

The application is gmplayer (I think it is in the package gnome-mplayer)
Disabling the Desktop Effects seems to fix the problem, but it made me
loose the borders of the windows and I'm unable to reactivate compiz
frome now (odd behaviour of that option making that deactivating the
effect and react
If you have desktop effects enabled, we also suggest that you use x11 as your
vo, instead of xv, and let us know if this makes any difference.
Please note that desktop effects may interfere with video playback, so you may
want to switch them off in these cases.
