Hi Bryce,
I'd be happy to test it, but unfortunately I will not have access to the
hardware until thanksgiving at the earliest :(
I'll be sure to give it a try then.
Sorry about the delay on my part...

Wow. I didn't really expect this to work, but now it does -- it even associates
my monitor section correctly, as it would not do before (Option
"Monitor-TMDS-1" "monitorsection" did not previously work, but does now). Sweet

Still, I wonder what causes the underlying problem. It may be that i
I have the same problems with a Thinkpad T61 and the same graphics adapter. My
screen is a Samsung SyncMaster 243T. When connected on the dvi port of the
dock, I get the signal out of range message as soon as gdm should appear. I can
login blindly and get to gnome, but that's not too elegant.

Adding the xorg.conf for the monitor section (I haven't been able to
find a way to configure it specifically for TMDS-1, though I thought
that the automatic configuration script would be able to tell where the
monitor is)
** Attachment added: "xorg.conf"

There are two things at work here, as far as I can tell:
While the Dell is configured in the "Monitor" section, it is apparently
configured as a VGA output:
from line 477
(II) intel(0): Output VGA using monitor section DELL2407WFPH
That monitor section came directly from a dpkg-reconfigure xserv
This is clearly a problem with xorg failing to properly detect the
external monitor (maybe the intel driver does not properly pick up on
the TMDS DVI-passthrough connection?), as it happens during the x
session outside of GDM as well.

It's the intel x3100 (Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated

Thanks for your report, i don't think this is a GDM issue it sounds to
me more like a xorg one. Which video card do you have in your T61?

I have a screen connected via DVI passthrough on my T61 docking station.
