My problem was that on my newer notebook 'HDA Intel PCH' sound card was
not the default for some reason. It's either different hardware or could
also be the fact that I'm using 15.10 instead of 14.04
You may try to change the 'card' parameter in the
.config/volumeicon/volumeicon. It is set to 'def

We've discussed this a bit on IRC, but for the bug report as well:
I was not able to trigger a crash when running `volumeicon` on my 15.04
vm. One theory is that it might be related to Nvidia since that is
mentioned in the error message.
