This is a bug in xfdesktop4. It will be fixed in version 4.12.2 in the
next couple of days.
You can test the new version by installing xfdesktop4 from my PPA:

By the way, I mean drag & drop, not click & drop ^^
copy - paste in terminal IS functional, but leads to
"file:///home/myself/filename" instead of "/home/myself/filename"
