Seems to be fixed with version 1:0.6.0+git20071002-0ubuntu1
At least my German Umlauts are displayed correctly with this version
now.

Well, that looks like a regression since Feisty with Trevino's repository.
Maybe it should be possible to find out what commit caused that regression.

The problem is the same with Hungarian accented letters (éáűúőöüó). Some
characters are replaced by a question mark.
I tried to change the font of the title bar, but that didn't help either. This
bug appeared just a few days/week ago...

Please note wrong Umlaut in the title bar. In the task bar the title is
displayed with a correct umlaut.
