I've filled a bug for lx-qt, since this also happens in SMPlayer.
The stack trace:
$ gdb vlc
(gdb) r
Segmentation fault
(gdb) bt

Does it occur on any other DM than LXDE? Otherwise, it looks like a bug
in LXQT... Stack trace would be nice.
