I know that happened to me on Ubuntu 7.10. I don't use desktop effects
because I ran into too much problems so it's difficult to me to say if the
bug is there. I have switched the "Desktop effects" on. I will tell you if
the problem happens again.

This does not happen with every theme. If i use default theme, I don't
get this bug.

Same problem for tooltips and popup windows like the one of the Update-
manager.

I have the same problem but it is not caused by gimp in my case, and in
fact it isn't EVERY menu either I can't seem to narrow it down. I am
running ubuntu gutsy 7.10 i386 with an ATI Radeon 9950

I can confirm this problem. Observation showed me that it only happens
with GIMP. Haven't seen another application behaving like this. Only
tooltips and window borders like to crash and leave their shadow behind.
When i restart the compiz window decoration plugin, the screen gets
"clean" again. So
