Would you mind trying removing the folder /home/phablet/.config/pulse
and trying a reboot?
There was indeed an issue of apps affecting other apps regarding mute,
and that got fixed already and landing as part of the next OTA (which
should be out in a few hours).

Thanks a lot for this clarification.
And indeed, my son seems to have switched the sound to off in pathwind
in-between. However switching it on solves the problem only within
pathwind. The music app and the browser still don't play a sound. Not
even after rebooting the system.

Thanks, that's not a settings application issue though. Did you play
some game like pathwind or machines-vs-machines and muted the sound in
the game? There is a known issue that it mutes sound for the system and
you need to unmute in the game, that should be fixed with the new ota
update though
