I have the same problem. I can't find anything that allows the use of a
remote printer (i.e. one shared by cups on another machine on the
network). Local system is cups 2.02, remote is cups 1.7.2 (Ubuntu
14.04).

For the time being do the following:
If you do not want to share any of your local printers, turn off printer
sharing via the "Server settings" in system-config-printer or via the
cups
i spoke too soon.
i got a pc working somehow, on a laptop, i did the same setup and conf
and nothing works.

I wonder if un-ticking the "view -> discovered printers" can resolve showing
duplicated printers? I think this might address your point 3.

after stopping cups, i rm printers.conf and deleted the network printers
entry from printers.conf.O
restarted cups
using cups webgui, manually added the network printers with "Share"
field checked.
all the printers as seen in cups webgui now appears in ubuntu print
dialogs and in system-config-p
Same problem as quiricada says in #8, if I un-share a printer, it cannot
be listed in 'system-config-printer'.
I think this happens after I upgrade from ubuntu 14.10 to 15.04 at Apr.

cannot find any printers listed in print dialog
In system-config-printer you can turn on and off listing of discovered
printers via the "View" menu. What is your setting there?
