I can confirm Hadmut's observation that it only happens when the on-
screen-display shows something. Deactivating it resolves the issue.
The issue persists in xenial (current dev); in addition playback stops
after 3 frames (I can, however, fast-forward and rewind). However, there

As far as I can see it is caused by the white overlay:
When scrolling forward/backward it happens as log as the white
progress/position bars are visible.
And it remains white, if I choose to have the time visible, which is
also a white overlay.

I found that the whitening effect in some cases happens only if I
activate the onscreen display (press o ). It seems as if that somehow
propagates the white value and causes some avalance effect.

Sounds like a regression after trusty indeed, then. Andre and Hadmut,
would you be willing to test if this is stil present in Xenial? You can
use a live CD for that purpose.

Note that I had the same setup with 14.04, which worked perfectly with
MPlayer, but sometimes showed a purple border with VLC.
As it stands, vlc won't work at all with vdpau output on my current
system, so I cannot tell if this is an mplayer thing. I've tried with
youtube and MP4 videos from vario

I cannot generally confirm this. Maybe this is dependent on what kind
of file is played? Maybe you can upload or link to a file that exhibits
the problem.

Using MPlayer2 2.0-728-g2c378c7-2ubuntu3 with libvdpau_va_gl 0.3.4-1 (by
prepending "VDPAU_DRIVER=va_gl" before the mplayer command), the display
becomes white while fast-forwarding/rewinding. It appears as if the
frames are just added in terms of brightness instead
