Can I suggest trying the new Intrepid PPA kernel? In my case, it solved

I confirm the bug on my HP-Compaq nc6120 running Kubuntu Hardy Beta
(kernel v 2.6.24-12). It seems to be the same as bug #34389 and related
bugs.

A misteriuos solution! When running Linux 2.6.21.5 x86_64 GNU/Linux,
everything is smooth, only one event for open, only one event for close.

No, the syslog is clear. It may be a bug in the driver (due to different
behavior of those buttons, maybe), because I've tried Debian Etch 4.0,
