This is happening on my computer. Evolution says "Do not notify me when new mail arrives" (that option is checked), and I'm staring at a blinking icon that says "You have received 6 new messages in INBOX." -- evolution does not stop to signal 'new mail has arrived" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs
