Ted, it was indeed a memory issue which only occurred once the buffers
were filled to a certain degree. Memtest was getting red all over the
screen. Thanks again, and status set to invalid.

Can you try running memtest86+ for 12-24 hours, and see if that turns
up anything? Sometimes flaky memory can result in very confusing
problems / symptoms --- espeially when it almost but not always works
correctly.
The other thing which I might be suspicious about is if there might be
some subtl

- Using an old 2 TB drive instead of the 6 TB drive: GPF (so it's not related
to the drives or the large capacity)
- mainline/v3.17.3 kernel: GPF
- Debian wheezy live cd: GPF
- mkfs.ext3 to a USB-stick: worked flawles
