The artifacts are because 1680x1050 is not a native resolution. All
native resolutions on the Geode are in the 4:3 proportion.

I understand, but it's funny since the old version of the driver (marked
unstable on dev.laptop.org) did go to 1680x1050, even if with some
artifacts due to some bugs...

There's specific resolutions that are supported by the AMD driver.
Additionally, if the device you are using doesn't have enough memory
reserved for video, larger resolutions simply won't work.

Now it's working, it's just not going 1680x1050 and it says for unknown
reason in the logs.
If I set the FBSize to the right value (64M on my machine), it stops
like above
