I can additionally confirm this behavior. Worked fine in feisty with wine 0.9.41. Now cannot alt-tab out without losing sound until game restart. Now running gutsy with wine 0.9.46. (Clean install, since dist-upgrade killed sound completely) -- No sound in WoW (under Wine) after alt-tabbing

You can kill WoW.exe by using the -9 option, so kill -9 will kill World of Warcraft. I hoped the upgrade to wine 0.9.45 would fix the problem, but it didn't. One more option to keep sound while alt-tabbing is to play in Windowed mode and then making the window fullscreen. You loose a bit of your
