The same happened to me. In my case when setting the passphrase the keyboard
layout was another than later set.
For example: pass-phrase was actually pass/phrase

I'm able to unlock it manually but not using the installed system's own
tools. I have to use a Live image. But both the 14.04 and 14.10 Live
images work for that. Is there some boot parameter I could use to try
the installed system's own tools manually? The virtual consoles are not
available un

points to it not being a bug with the keymap.)

fine manually from a working Live session.

I've tried getting at the installed partition using the 14.04 live
image. When I go to the console:
# cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda4 foo
# mount /dev/mapper/foo /mnt
Cryptsetup accepts the decryption password ok, but mount gives the error
"mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVWM2_member'"
