Install the extended preferences plugin and check the box that says
allow me to make the thing narrower than normal. Piece of cake and the
plugin is even in the repositories.

completely exit pidgin
in the file $HOME/.purple/prefs.xml find this key
change this value to something sensible like 80-120 ish
restart pidgin
