I am not sure about all of them. They included Jenkins, tomcat and a
bunch of obsolete packages removed by the upgrade

Strangely, after purging teh configs of my removed packages (that still
had upstart jobs on my machine) I did nto have to wait 2 mins for
network while my machine booted this morning. I am hoping that this
fixed state keeps repeating.

I can confirm bug is related to upstart, if i switch temporary to
systemd, network-manager is launched fine.

1) Hold down control key at power-on to enter grub menu.
2) Press 'e' to edit the top (default) kernel command-line.

Also, I used to have a wifi dongle attached to teh machine which is no
longer ther. I have changed /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules to
no longer include it (problem still persists)

Thanks for taking the time to report this issue. Please can you do the
following:
1) Run 'apport-collect 1379021' to attach required logs to this bug
report.
2) Attach /etc/network/interfaces (and any files you've created in
/etc/network/interfaces.d/).
3) Attach /etc/fstab
4) Add '-
I have upgraded an otehr machine which is not exhibitng this issues. The
other machine has a ethernet and wirelesss nics while the amchine
showing the bug only has ethernet.
