projectM caused my crash, I had just installed libvisual-projectM and
had tried to turn it on. All the other visuals work fine.

lv_flower, lv_gltest, madspin, nastyfft & projectm are opengl
visualizations. if they're crashing on gutsy or later then it's most
likely related to your opengl setup being crappy/broken.
either libvisual (may already do this?) or amarok need to be patched up
to detect if the opengl setup is crapp
Had this happen to me just now:
1) Installed amarok (new install of hardy, everything dist-upgraded as of today)
2) Installed libvisual-0.4-plugins and libvisual-projectm (plus dependencies)
3) Restarted amarok, switched on some visualizations.

I did not ever get around to recompiling libvisual, and libvisual is not
causing amarok to crash for me any more.

:( that stacktrace is useless.
Can you guys reproduce this (only the jess crasher)? If so are you
comfortable with rebuilding the libvisual package with --enable-debug ?
if not then i'll be back home later this week and i'll upload libvisual
packages with debugging symbols. See ubuntu bug #150781
I've encountered this as well (under Gutsy), after installing
libvisual-0.4-plugins and attempting to start various visualizations.
Half the visualizations seem to work fine, while half seem to crash
immediately (jess, lv_flower, lv_gltest, nastyfft).
