I tested this with Intrepid live CD, and it works now. Support for
LaserJet 1000 was added in hplip 2.7.12 according to the changelogs, and
Hardy was the first Ubuntu release to include a later version. I am
setting this to fix released.

I have reported the separate issues against KDE Print Manager (kdebase).
HPLIP should either work with 1000, or deny to install it.

Don, Raghu, Aaron, it seems that hp-setup (called from hp-toolbox) sets
up the HP LaserJet 1000 with the HPLIP CUPS backend but the hP LaserJet

HPLIP Toolbox installed the printer into Administration/Printing using the HP

What happens if you install your printer with the normal usb backend instead of
the hplip backend?
Did system-config-printer automatically install your printer with the hplip
backend
On my stable working Feisty system I don't get these lines in
/var/log/messages, only on Gutsy:
INFO: open device failed; will retry in 30 seconds...
HPLIP Toolbox doesn't report any "device not found" error, either.
