If you share your HOME folder, the permissions are changed. I had my
home shared and tried setting permissions and ownership with no resolve.
I unshared the folder and the problem went away.
When sharing, permissions are set on your folders
Possible resolution: Don't allow sharing of $HOME f

I found the problem and fixed it.
Somehow my home dir had 777 permissions.
I changed to 700 and all is fine now.
