FYI, the current development version of audacity (1.3.x) uses a different set
of widgets, and it is no longer possible to create a directory in the Open
File dialog. However, the Save Project As... menu entry in the File
menu produces a dialog box that allows directory creation. Using an illegal
I don't know about 8.10 (where do I get that?).
I installed the current version from the ubuntu repository, which
claims to be 1.2.6-0ubuntu1. The bug is still there, although
now the program displays the message "invalid directory name"
and then segvs.
