my system is a laptop with nvidia driver (looking forward to having an
open-source alternative to their drivers).
i am having the same problem of not having window decoration.
after modifying my xorg.conf according to suggestions posted earlier i still
had the problem.
but i have used this
I found a solution, for me: see bug 154596 for details.
The procedure there, of adding "AddARGBGLXVisuals" to xorg.conf fixes
the problem for me.

I've got this problem in Hardy, and none of the above suggestion have
fixed it.
I even tried dpkg -P all of the compiz packages, and re-installing, to
no effect.

I solved it by deleting my xorg.conf and letting X write a new one with
"X -configure". I think my old was just too customized.

preferences no effects and then again resetting extra effects.

I have the same problem (no window decorations and the terminal is just
white) with the release-version of gutsy (on a 6600GT and the
"nvidia"-driver).
compiz-gnome is installed and doesn't help.
gtk-window-decorator --replace doesn't help either (but since the terminal is
just white I can't see
Same problem with Gutsy full updated.
I solved this installing compiz-gnome. Why is not installed by default?

I had the same problem with preference button, I solved after reinstall

well, 'gtk-window-decorator --replace' did not work for me (with up-to-
date gutsy). Also, gnome-terminal and tooltip popups are just white
boxes when I enable 'Visual Efects'
