You appear to be experiencing a different bug. I cannot reproduce this bug on
Kubuntu Tribe 5.
Can you please open a new bug report, run the installer again using the --debug
option, and attach /var/log/installer/debug, /var/log/partman, and
/var/log/syslog to the new report?

Patrice, or anyone who is experiencing this bug in Ubuntu, can you try
the install using one of the latest daily live CDs
(http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/)? I believe the bug is
no longer present.

I can confirm this with Gutsy Kubuntu Tribe 5
Trying to format /dev/sda7 hangs the installer at "5%" (formatting
/dev/sda7).
I can format via qtparted or mkfs.xfs but since the installer wants to
format the partition when installing "/" on it pre-formatting is no help
...

Patrice, is there anything already installed on that drive? Specifically
if it has a swap partition on it, the drive may be mounted to use that.
Do you know if the drive is mounted from boot? Do you have some reason
to believe that it is upon starting the installer that it's mounted?
