i having the same problem too... I did the same .. remove update-notifier that
remove also ubuntu-desktop and now no problem.

I was having the same problem. Not quite sure how to 'fix' it, i did
find a workaround. Just went into synaptic, (which informed me that I
had a broken package) i went to the 'broken' filter, and just removed
