If this helps, I have similar behavior. Ekiga shows the video, but
EasyCam throws an error - "no camera found" and merely launching Cheese
causes a complete freeze of gnome. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04. Gnome
2.22.3.

I just tested it on Ubunut 8.10 beta in VirtualBox. dmesg recognized the
camera, but either Ekiga or Skype doesn't work. Skype at least shows
green noise.
And I found another thing: It depends in which front USB I plug it. It
even gives different dmesg output. One shows the green noise in Skype,

On Hardy (64-bit) it works at least with Ekiga. (I don't have the 32-bit
machine to test it)

I just upgraded my laptop to Hardy, pluged the webcam nad voila... works! With
Cheese and Skype.

Leann, I'm now using Hardy and the webcam works with Kopete, but doesn't
work with Cheese nor Ekiga.
My girlfriend is also using Hardy (but 64-bit) and the same webcam works
with both Kopete and Cheese.

I have the same problem... Genius MEssenger webcam (0c45:602e Microdia
as reported by lsusb) worked in feisty, but don't work in gutsy.
