How to dim the screen probably depends on the laptop vendor and which
NVIDIA card you have as I'd imagine the register that controls the
backlight probably isn't always in the same place. Dells normally have
to use the smbios interface to get at such things but if sending the
monitor DPMS standby d

problem arises on other Nvidia chips.
