xgamma -gamma 0.75
If that doesn't work you need to install xgamma from the repos.

'Fn' (function) key + left arrow key (decrease backlight brightness)
returns:
0xe0 0x6f 0xe0 0xef
'Fn' (function) key + right arrow key (increase backlight brightness)
returns nothing.
