Should update this:
I had to install xubuntu with the nomodeset switch to boot from the DVD and
didn't realize this option was installed in my /det/default/grub.
After install I removed the nomodeset and now the laptop boots fine and
the blank screen at logout is gone

So, even switching to the linux console (tty1) via Ctrl+Alt+F1 is not
possible anymore? Furthermore, please attach /var/log/syslog and the log
files located in /var/log/lightdm/ to this report.
