Would the patch in bug 127163 fix this? If I understand things
correctly it adds support for the ICH8 mobile ATA controller, which I
think this laptop has.

Here is a temporary work-around:
edit /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and add 'ide-generic'
update-initramfs -k `uname -r` -u
You can also simply 'modprobe ide-generic'.
