I can observe this specifically when I am connecting to an SMB share
using gvfs. Some folders with images work while others do not.

I have the same problem, but have not experienced any loss of
functionality. It only seems to happen when gThumb generates new
thumbnails. The same problem is described in bug #1307127 but I am not
sure whether the two are related.
