I've reproduced the bug in unpatched versions of Kubuntu 7.04 and Ubuntu
6.06. Both used the default kernel on an i686. I included more details
in the bug report I linked to above.

/etc/init.d/powernowd stop didn't make any difference on my system. I
tried disabling the daemon through sytem settings just to be sure, but
the kernel panic is still happening.

You have to be in text mode for the kernel panic to display. e.g. press
Ctrl-Alt-F1. I tested this on Feisty, but I now have a broadband
internet connection so I don't need to use a dial-up modem. I do still
have the modem and dialup account, so I'll try reproducing it on Gutsy.

I've reproduced this bug. I reported it separately (bug #156164)
because for some reason I couldn't find your report after searching.
I had almost identical symptoms when connecting to a flat-rate ISP (also
with an 0808 number). The only difference is I couldn't get the output
in your attachment
I noticed this bug has had a 'needs-improvement' tag added. What extra
information can I provide to help confirm this?
If someone in the UK with access to an analogue modem would like to help
reproduce this crash, I can provide them with a dialup account for
testing purposes.
