@joecarey, That gray/difficult to read icon is with the non-default icon
theme (Numix in my case). I checked and ubuntu-mono doesn't have this
problem (both icons use white background). Consider advising the Numix
Project about this.

Er, with one small exception. The text entry icon appears, but in its
greyed-out form only. I was watching a video review of 14.04 and
noticed the icon appears its usual bright white. Small thing, but there
it is.

Same problem for me maybe. I have a Japanese keyboard but installed
Trusty in English (my mother tongue). The indicator no longer shows up
when I am in English input mode. I can only switch to Japanese input by
