The crash you posted is from gnome-panel, not man-db or troff ...
It's not clear why a reboot should fix it up. I suspect your filesystem
is damaged in some way; check your system logs.

After restarting, it now works fine. Synaptic didn't notify me that I
had to reboot, so probably a package should be modified to fix this.
