I deleted the printer and recreated it - that worked. Will add the
requested information when the problem appears again (it usually happens
after being disconnected for a while).

files one by one, do not compress them nor pack them together.
If still nothing goes into the error_log, restart the CUPS daemon
Confirmed, I also have the same problem with an HP Color LaserJet 1600
on Ubuntu 13.10
