As I already stated in a comment, latest development release is OK. The
bug was reported against 13.10, which is the current stable release.

Grzegorz Galezowski, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't
been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-l
I just looked at the screenshot I attached and it looks like the font on
the screenshot is alright. The screen is only what suffers.
Anyway, some new info:
1. the font looks bad always when I enable vesa driver, even from live cd
2. 13.10 boots into failsafe X on my machine, but 14.04 alpha boots
