To follow up - both of these problems (need to disable DRI, and
corrupted screen) are fixed in the latest Gutsy release.

Can confirm - the workaround is to disable dri (I unloaded the dri
module) - and it no longer crashes - however vncviewer then shows a
corrupted screen - confirmed using 4.1.2 viewer from Gentoo and Windows
PCs, and using tightvnc viewer 1.3.9.
