I also experience this problem with Hardy, Firefox 3 beta 5. In
particular, gmail and google reader have very slow scrolling speeds
(something like a half second delay between one move of the mouse wheel
and the actual scrolling action ocurring).

version in hardy alpha 6

Well that option is probably used by very few webpages.
Other browsers seem not to be affected.
And I'm not using Firefox, but Epiphany, so firebug is not an option.

I beg to differ. This bug has been around for years and happens on any
page with fixed positioning where the fixed content overlaps static
content (and/or vice versa). With the firebug extension*, remove the
word 'fixed' from the background rule and scrolling becomes smooth
again.

By the way,
I've asked a friend to test that very site in Windows using Microsoft
Internet Explorer and Opera, and they both don't seem to slow down.
So this issue is very Firefox/Gecko specific.
