Booted in Ubuntu kernel and it seemed to be fixed, system boots until
login screen with backlight on.

Borph, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/
I can confirm that just booting the latest kernel
(3.13.0-031300rc2-generic) is fixing this! Display is in normal
brightness setting during bootup.
