Could be... Anyway I think if you remove bumblebee, which has the nvidia
driver as a dependency, the integrated graphics should be activated. I
guess it's somewhere here something goes wrong.

can it be ta this is because /etc/modprobe.d/bumblebee.conf is still
left behind? (this file blacklists nvidia drivers)

After removing, the kernel will not load nvidia nor nouveau for an
nvidia graphics card. The only fix seems to be re-installing ubuntu.
