With newest Ubuntu 8.10 (as far as I tested) the white background noice
is gone. So, the sound quality is much better now.

I did some further testing. It all depends on what devices are selected:
Playback:
Logitech Logitech USB Speaker USB Audio (ALSA) does not work
ALSA - Advanced Sound Architecture works
Mixer:
Playback: ALSA PCM on front: 1 (USB Audio) via DMA hotkeys works
Logitech
I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 (Beta + updates). The USB-audio does not seem
to work at all. When I try to test the audio (from gnome) I get the
following error message: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert
! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink:.
Then the message continues with a finnish message w
Please use pavucontrol to adjust the desired audio device. To use any
multimedia hotkeys, please configure them using System> Preferences>
Sound> Devices> Default Mixer Tracks.

Problems with USB-speaker
>Volume control of the panel keeps using wrong audio device. It uses
integrated audio device instead of external USB speakers. However,
double clicking >the panel volume control opens window with correct

This seems not to be an issue anymore with ubuntu hardy.
