Again, I have an SB Live! card.
I went into volume control and clicked on the "Switches" tab and there
was a check box nest to "SB Live Analog/Digital Output Jack". I
unchecked it and the fuzzyness went aw
I'm not certain if this is related, but most sound coming out of my
system is fuzzy, including system sounds such as the startup chord.

I tried reducing everything in alsa mixer, but nothing to do, still get
this annoying distortion on some songs (those with a lot of bass).
It's a big problem I think since I kind listen to lots of my songs
because they sound so bad.

Many Linux distro - and as far I remember - had this overdrive feature -
on many different soundcards (all cards but not all distros - does DSL
have it?). I always had to reduce the master and player's volume. I
think this is alsa unwanted feature
