I haved the same problem with the drivers provided in Ubuntu. My
temporary solution its:
1) install the drivers from ATI. Installation works OK on my system using this
guide:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Gutsy_Installation_Guide
2) create a symlink to the volatile directory & restar
it's not the best or "indicated" way - but for a quick & dirty solution
U can install Envy. Envy will install last ATI driver - for the actual
driver the empty xorg.conf is a known issue - they repair this issue but
on fglrx 8.40.4 which can be installed only with Envy now.
