What about even newer version within the distribution? 8109 is current
and 8151 is testing. There are ready packages in a repository in JOSM
project:

but one has to know how to use it.

Thanks to Bas Couwenberg, JOSM packages in both Debian (sid) and Ubuntu
(Vervet) are using the latest stable version right after the release. It
never happened before, it's really great to see the Debian package being
now actively maintained.
