It works for me, I replaced the "~" with "."
Go to Preferences, Local Capture, Directory for captured pics and replacle
"~/Webcam_Pictures" with "./Webcam_Pictures".

I have ubuntu 12.10 and this problem still exitsformeaswell. I gave up
and decided to use cheese instead. works without any issues.

OK, I think I now what problem is. If you open Preferences, it's
possible to change directory for snapshots. By default, it's
~/Webcam_Pictures. If you change it to any directory with full path,
like /home/user/Webcam_Pictures, camorama works perfectly. If you try to
use any relative path, starting

I can attest that this also occurs on Debian in version 0.17-5, but not
in 0.18-2. I suggest that Ubuntu just update.
